FROM THE VERTICAL WORLD:
Haley, Schaefer Link Devil's Thumb Peaks
Comments: 0
Colin Haley and Mikey Schaefer have completed the first ascent of the Diablo Traverse on the Devil's Thumb massif on the Stikine Icecap region. Their three-day push included a link-up of the summits of Witches Tits, Cat's Ears Spires, and Devil's Thumb. The pair flew to the basecamp below the Devil's Thumb southeast face on Thursday, August 12, and began their climb the next morning. Climbing the notch between the Witches Tits via the Edwards-Miller route with the Walsh-Ike Witches Cleavage variation, the pair gained the summit of the West Witches Tit then headed to the summit of the East Witches Tit. On Saturday, August 14, the team climbed the Elias-McMullen route to the Cat's Brow on their way to the Cat's Ears summits. On Sunday, the team summited the West Buttress of the Devil's Thumb. Read details of the traverse in Colin Haley's account below.New British Route in Cordillera Oriental, Peru
Comments: 0
British Climbers Tom Chamberlain and Tony Barton have made a significant first ascent on Huaguruncho (5723m), Cordillera Oriental, Peru. Their new line, Llama Karma (1000m ED/ 90·/V, 24 pitches) was climbed over four days and tackles the large south west face of Huaguruncho. Chamberlain and Barton had tried a similar line back in 2008, accompanied by Olly Metherell, but had not reached the top. On re-acquaintance this year the pair (this time without Metherell) found that different snow conditions forced them to take an alternative line around to the left side of the large spur, as shown in the photo below and right.Outstanding free ascent on Troll Wall

The climbing world has been stunned by the news of Sindre Saether's free ascent of Arch Wall, a rarely repeated, legendary line up the centre of Romsdal's iconic Troll Wall. Climbing the highest part of Norway's Trollveggen, the huge, largely north-facing wall between Trollryggen and Store Trolltind in the Romsdal Valley, the 1,200m-high Arch Wall is often wet, loose and considered possibly the hardest route of its type in the country.Pou Brothers Repeat Panaroma - Alpine F8c
Comments: 0
Panaroma, the super hard Dolomite multipitch route has been repeated by the Pou brothers. The route, first freed by the Alex Huber back in 2007, has pitches up to F8c in difficulty, with spaced protection. It crosses the huge roof on the North Face of Cima Ovest di Lavaredo, in the Dolomites. |
